Famous Florentine Actors and Directors
- Franco Zeffirelli (Gianfranco Corsi) (1923), the film director and opera designer, producer and director was born in Florence, where he was brought up under the wing of the British community. He is especially famous for his film version of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Jesus of Nazareth and, more recently, Tea with Mussolini.
- Roberto Benigni (1952), the actor and director, was born in Castiglion Fiorentino. He became world-famous for his film La Vita è Bella, which won 3 Oscars. He was the first non English-speaker to win an Oscar as best actor. He also made a version of Collodi’s Pinocchio. In Italy he is particularly known for his public readings of Dante.
- Mario Monicelli (1915), the well-known director, was born in Viareggio, directing some films which action takes place in Florence. Among these is Amici miei.
